2006 MAPAA Scholastic A State Champion
2009 WGPO Scholastic A State Champion
The Piedmont colorguard and winterguard programs are directed by Mr. Jarin Southerland, assisted by Kristine Thompson and Brandon White. The colorguard and winterguard have developed a reputation as some of the finest of their kind in Oklahoma, due to their demanding design and high levels of performance.
During the fall marching band season, the colorguard provides visual continunity to the show’s impact through the use of flags, dance, rifle, and saber. The colorguard attends all regular rehearsals, and also rehearses on Thursday evenings though marching band season.
During the winter and spring, the guard transitions to performing indoors to recorded music, an activity called “winterguard.” During winterguard season, the Piedmont guard has won one MAPAA state championship (2006) and has participated in WGI Regionals in Dallas and Kansas City, and the WGI World Championship in Dayton, Ohio. The guard was selected as a finalist at the 2008 Kansas City WGI Regional, a first for the program. Rehearsals for the winterguard typically involve two evenings per week, plus Saturdays in which there is not a contest.
Winterguard members who started as members of the band program continue their membership in band during concert season by playing their instruments, but students interested in performing with the guard who do not currently play an instrument are also welcome to try out; no experience is necessary to join. Band members may choose to be in colorguard and not winterguard, and vice versa, however, most members do participate in both.
