GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Welcome parents! If your student is a 6th grader this year, we are excited to have them with us in the band program! For our 7th grade parents, we are extremely gratified that you and your student have chosen to continue their participation in our band program! AUGUST 28: 6th Grade Parents: We are aiming for a goal of having instruments by the end of next week, Thursday, September 2. If you have a previously owned instrument that needed repair and the instrument will still be at the repair shop, that is acceptable. AUGUST 13: To our 6th grade parents: Your student DOES NOT need an instrument during the first couple weeks of school. We spend that time teaching them basic musical concepts, as well as procedures for setting up the class every day, and our expectations for their behavior. If you already have an instrument, please have the student bring it so that one of the directors can take a look at it, verify its suitability, and suggest any repairs that may be needed. Both 6th and 7th grade bands meet at Piedmont Middle School in separated classes so that students can get more individual attention on their instrument and improve more quickly. The middle school band schedule is as follows:
The performance schedule usually includes a concert in December and one in May, as well as contest performances. The 6th grade has attended band contests in Catoosa, Marlow, Mounds, Deer Creek, and Moore in past years. The 7th grade band either attends the OSSAA district contest at Edmond Santa Fe in early March, or another festival depending on the scheduling needs of the group. We realize that parents of our new 6th grade students have many questions regarding purchasing or renting instruments for your student. If your student plays flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, or percussion, they can either take part in our Instrument Usage program, or go to a local music store for their instrument. If your student plays alto saxophone, you will need to rent or purchase from a local music store. If your student plays French horn or tuba, the band program will provide an instrument for your student to use, but you will need to purchase a mouthpiece for your child. Mouthpieces may be purchased through the band program. |
